Artificial intelligence is no longer a unique source of competitive advantage. It’s rapidly becoming the price of admission.

As AI becomes ubiquitous, the organizations that achieve lasting competitive advantage won’t simply be the most technologically capable. They’ll be the ones that use technology to strengthen what has always mattered most — human connection.

Business leaders have been wrestling with the question of how artificial intelligence will transform their organizations, and they continue to ask it. It’s an important question, but I don’t believe it’s the most important.

A better question is: Once everyone has it, how do we stand out?

History suggests the answer.

After watching four decades of technological change reshape industry after industry, I’ve learned to be skeptical of any claim that a new technology will be a lasting competitive advantage. History has a way of moving the goalposts.

Every transformative technology follows a remarkably similar pattern. It begins as a meaningful differentiator for early adopters, then becomes widely adopted, and eventually becomes something everybody has.

Electricity transformed manufacturing. The internet transformed commerce. Smartphones transformed customer engagement. Cloud computing democratized sophisticated technology once available only to the largest organizations.
